Rain Songs

Well, okay. I’ll succumb to another “meme” (but I plan to do another more substantive post tonight on my GarageBand experience, so I’m sure you won’t mind). This one’s an inadvertent one, courtesy of David (via Elkit), who lists his Top 5 songs about rain. But, knowing me, I can never limit my lists to just 5, so instead, here’s my Top 10 favorite rain songs…

10) Tara MacLean - Let Her Feel the Rain
From Silence. Saw her at Lilith Fair, and I’ve been taken with her ever since. But then, I’m always a sucker for brunettes. She fit in really well with Lilith Fair because her sound is pretty similar to Sarah McLachlan’s.

9) Billie Myers - Kiss the Rain
You’ve probably heard this one, since it was a hit. From Growing, Pains, which I don’t actually own, but I did see her in concert at Lilith Fair. I borrowed the album once from a friend, and I have to say the album pales pretty badly compared to her live performance, especially the rockin’ Tell Me, which I actually thought was her best song by far (but isn’t about rain).

8) Peter Gabriel - Red Rain
From So, of course. No explanation needed, I hope, because you all already own that album, right? Right?

7) Dar Williams - Beauty of the Rain
From the album of the same name. Dar Williams kicks ass. By far my favorite folk artist, and a real treat to see live (definitely check out her live album, Out There Live, which also serves as a great introduction to a lot of her best work, although it predates Beauty of the Rain). The song is so low on this list because it’s not one of her best, but it’s still pretty damn good.

6) Les Miserables (Frances Ruffelle / Michael Ball) - A Little Fall of Rain
Please don’t make me explain this one. Well, okay. I’ve seen Les Miz at least four times, and it was my favorite musical (until Rent), and this is one of the best songs (second to On My Own) from it. Personally, I prefer the Original London Cast to the Broadway version, especially because it includes the wonderfully cute Little People. And I don’t like the Complete Symphonic version because Eponine has to be Frances Ruffelle (although I recall my sister saw Debbie Gibson play her on Broadway and said she was actually pretty good).

5) Heather Nova - London Rain (Nothing Heals Me Like You Do)
From Siren, although I don’t actually own any Heather Nova CDs since is the only song of hers that I like. I’m always a sucker for catchy pop tunes with high-pitched female vocals.

4) Led Zeppelin - Fool in the Rain
From In Through the Out Door. Just can’t get that catchy riff outta my head. This is actually one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs, which I know is kinda odd considering it’s not really like the rest of their music.

3) Dream Theater - Acid Rain
From Live Scenes from New York, a live concert album (in case that wasn’t immediately obvious). A short instrumental jam from these excellent progressive-metal rockers with fingers of flame.

2) Radiohead - Sit Down. Stand Up.
From their latest album, Hail to the Thief. I know “rain” isn’t in the title, but considering that the lyrics repeat “the rain drops” no less than 46 times, I think we can allow it. Doesn’t hurt that the song kicks ass.

1) Tori Amos - Northern Lad
From from the choirgirl hotel (I’ve always wanted to say that). Okay, “rain” isn’t in the title of this one either, but the soaring high of the amazing chorus features “because of the rain.” Besides, this is my list, and I just can’t have a list of favorite songs without Tori Amos at #1. Otherwise, the universe would cease to exist, and we can’t have that, can we?

Well hey, look at that, I just saved the universe! You know, it’s really not as hard as Buffy makes it look.
